Friday, June 20th, leading Chinese-language tech media outlet PingWest hosted the SYNC 2014 conference in San Francisco. It was a great event, and we here at InnoSpring were really happy to be involved. Over the next couple days we’ll be putting up video of the various panels and talks. Today, we have InnoSpring Chief Firestarter (and CEO) Dr. Xiao Wang putting the hard questions to 500 Startups Sith Lord Dave McClure. Working within the framework of the ‘Sexy and unSexy Innovation’ theme of the morning’s panel, Xiao and Dave chat about how his combined technical and marketing background helped prepare him for entrepreneurship and investment. After that, they touch on 500 Startups model and international outlook. Dave highlighted the differences between YC and 500 Startups, noting that 500 has real entrepreneurs and mentors in residence with their companies. Xiao knuckled down by asking about whether the 500 model was ‘spray and pray’, to which Dave pushed back against the traditional VC model as being too narrowly focused.
